Area Law Enforcement
Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for details.
A senior representative commented the incident left him without words and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
